We look back at the chaos from last week’s Battle Royal to determine a #1 Contender for the Women’s Championship, which ended with Asuka attacking the final three competitors. We find out that Asuka will face all three of these women at Takeover, but we get an update that reveals Ember Moon is out of the title match. Moon promises that when she gets back, she will be better.
Ember Moon’s title opportunity against NXT Women’s Champion Asuka will have to wait.
Moon suffered a grade one shoulder sprain as a result of Asuka’s ambush during last week’s No. 1 Contender’s Battle Royal and will not be able to compete at NXT TakeOver: Chicago on May 20, WWE.com has learned. Doctors estimate that Moon will require four to five weeks to recover from the injury.
Along with Ruby Riot and Nikki Cross, Moon was scheduled to challenge Asuka in an NXT Women’s Championship Fatal 4-Way Match in Chicago. NXT General Manager William Regal announced the title bout after Asuka crashed last week’s No. 1 Contender’s Battle Royal and brutalized the three finalists: Moon, Riot and Cross.
During the turmoil, The Empress of Tomorrow pushed Moon off the top turnbuckle before launching her through the ropes, causing Moon to fall hard on the floor.
More details are expected to be released this Wednesday on NXT.
Battle Royal – #1 Contender’s Match for the NXT Women’s Championship
The match starts with a couple women going after Victoria Gonzalez, who tries to eliminate Kay and Royce. Chaos has already ensued in the ring, as Cross is focused on Riot in the corner. Aliyah nearly eliminates Lacey Evans but to no avail, while Candice LaRae is nearly eliminated by Sara Bridges. Things continue to stay at a stand still as we go to break.
Back from the break, we find out Victoria Gonzales was eliminated as Bianca Blair is eliminated by the Iconic duo next. Meanwhile, Bridges and Cross are working on Lacey as Ember Moon and Aliyah work together trying to eliminate Rachel Evers. Royce is nearly eliminated but stays safe, but the same cannot be said for Rachel Evers who is eliminated by Aliyah. Bridges is out on the apron before being eliminated next, as are Sonya and Evans. Royce is saved from an elimination by Kay, as Riot eliminates Kimberly. Ember Moon works extra hard to eliminate Liv Morgan as Candice is eliminated by Peyton and Kay. Cross catches Aliyah on the apron to eliminate her next, and we are down to six. Iconic focus on Riot as Cross and Liv have at it, and Cross eliminates Liv. Iconic are now on Ember as Cross crawls right over to Riot. Kay tries to get Moon over the rope, but ends up being eliminated instead. Royce gets Moon on the apron, but is eliminated as well.
We’re down to three as Cross launches herself at Riot, and Moon goes after her. Cross tries to eliminate Moon but is taken down by Riot, giving Moon the opportunity to hit Eclipse on Cross. Moon gets Cross to the ropes, and Riot tries to take advantage to no avail as Moon hits a hard kick followed by a forearm in the corner. Moon up on the turnbuckle, but here comes Asuka. The champion drops Moon off the turnbuckle as the ref calls for the bell.
Winner: No Contest
Asuka takes out all three of the women in this battle royal, shouting that no one is ready to face her. Officials check on Moon as Asuka high-tails it out to the back, and Nikki Cross is livid saying Asuka’s name. William Regal comes to the stage, announcing that at Takeover: Chicago, Asuka will defend the NXT Women’s Championship against all three of the final women in the battle royal.
We look back at Takeover, seeing what Asuka will do to keep the title as she retained it against Ember Moon. Women from the NXT Women’s Division discuss her dominant reign as NXT Women’s Champion. It’s noted that Asuka is starting to get a little cocky in her confidence.
We take a look back at the Women’s Title Match at Takeover. We see the arena after the ring is taken down. Ember Moon walks into the arena and she says this was supposed to be her moment. This was supposed to be her opportunity to show the world that she can do anything. It was her destiny to win and to go down in history as the one. That is where it all went wrong. That is where Asuka proved that she will do anything to keep the NXT Women’s Championship. Just as you were mine, she will be hers. She will be the one and she will be the next NXT Women’s Champion.

Ember Moon vs. Asuka
We go to the ring and out first comes the undefeated Ember Moon. The undefeated NXT Women’s Champion Asuka is out next. We get formal ring introductions from Mike Rome.
NXT GM William Regal hands over the new Women’s Title belt and the referee raises it up. The bell rings and we get back & forth to start. They trade holds and takedowns. They do some taunting and intense back & forth early on. Asuka hits a hip attack but Ember gets right back up. Asuka ends up hitting another hip attack that sends Ember from the apron into the barrier. Asuka keeps control for a few minutes and goes for the Asuka Lock early on. She can’t get it as Ember nails a big forearm. Asuka goes to the floor. Ember springboards from the corner and splashes Asuka on the floor.
Ember brings it back in and looks to go for the Eclipse but Asuka stops her. Asuka unloads and hits a Shining Wizard for a 2 count. Asuka with kicks while Ember is on her knees now. Asuka keeps control and takes Ember to the mat with a hold. Ember powers up but Asuka jumps on her back and brings her back to the mat. Ember starts fading at one point but she manages to bring them both down. Asuka misses a hip attack and pays for it. They both go down again. More back and forth. Ember with a head scissors. Ember goes on and hits a dropkick but Asuka comes right back. Ember knees her and hits a fall-away slam. Ember keeps the offense going until Asuka catches her with a big German suplex from the ropes. Asuka with a 2 count. Fans do dueling chants as they unload on each other. Ember drops Asuka with a forearm but she gets right back up. Ember hooks Asuka’s leg and suplexes her on her head for a close 2 count. Ember goes to the top for the Eclipse. Asuka cuts her off and climbs up. Ember counters and plants Asuka on her face. Ember goes for the Eclipse but Asuka pushes the referee into the ropes, causing Ember to fall. Asuka nails a kick to the head and covers for the win.
