Career-changing matches don’t come along every day, but for NXT’s Ember Moon, that is exactly what lies ahead. After becoming No. 1 contender to Asuka’s NXT Women’s Championship, Moon is poised for her toughest challenge to date. This week, The War Goddess reveals her concerns and shares what motivates her heading into the title match at NXT TakeOver: Orlando.
WWE.COM: Ember, congratulations on earning the right to challenge Asuka at NXT Takeover: Orlando for the NXT Women’s Championship. How pumped are you for the match?
EMBER MOON: I’m extremely ecstatic about the opportunity. I feel like I’ve earned it. A lot of people are given things and a lot of people try to take things, but I can safely say I’ve earned the right to be the number one contender.
WWE.COM: What are some of the obstacles you’ve faced over the last year to get to this point?
MOON: One was just getting the people to believe in me. I wanted them to truly believe that I have the passion and the drive to set the bar higher than it’s ever been set in this division. In addition to that, I had to overcome people like Billie Kay and Peyton Royce, who have made a habit of taking opportunities and beating people down. I had to keep myself focused because I knew my destiny was to be in this match with Asuka.
WWE.COM: Since you brought them up, what are your thoughts on Kay and Royce attempting to have your finisher, the Eclipse, banned?
MOON: It’s never my intent to hurt anyone. It sucks that Billie Kay suffered an injury, but I think they’re just crying over spilled milk because they aren’t the ones getting the match with Asuka at TakeOver.
WWE.COM: I know you’re very familiar with Asuka’s career both in and out of NXT. What’s been your impression of her over the years?
MOON: I can honestly say that I used to be afraid of Asuka. Before I got to NXT, I used to watch her and think that she is someone I would not want to get in the ring with. Before I got to NXT, my confidence was very low, and I never thought I would amount to anything in sports-entertainment. But now, I’m going back and watching those old tapes of Asuka, watching the person I used to be afraid of. Now, I’m ready to face those fears and stand toe-to-toe with Asuka. After feeling the devastating effects of Ember Moon’s Eclipse, Billie Kay and her co-Breakout Star of the Year Peyton Royce are calling for The War Goddess’ signature move to be banned.
There has been no love lost between Moon and the self-proclaimed “iconic duo” in recent weeks, which led to a battle between The War Goddess and Kay on the March 8 edition of WWE NXT. Moon walked out victorious after connecting with the Eclipse, a diving stunner off the top rope, but the raucous crowd was brought to a hush as The Femme Fatale laid motionless in the squared circle.
Medical staff, officials and Royce checked on Kay, who was clutching her neck before leaving the ring under her own power and giving the NXT Universe an update on her condition on Twitter later that night. Continue reading Billie Kay & Peyton Royce call for Ember Moon’s Eclipse to be banned
NXT Women’s Champion Asuka vs. Ember Moon
History will be made at NXT TakeOver: Orlando on April 1 when two undefeated competitors collide for the NXT Women’s Championship, as Asuka defends her title against Ember Moon.
Since her arrival in NXT in October 2015, Asuka has been an unstoppable force. The Empress of Tomorrow has bulldozed over the competition with ease, stunning the NXT Universe last April at TakeOver: Dallas when she made Bayley pass out in the Asuka Lock to capture the championship.
After winning a rematch against Bayley in Brooklyn last August, Asuka has been begging for competition, and she has stood victorious whether she was facing the returning Mickie James or three of NXT’s top female Superstars at the same time.
Ember Moon has been on a similar path as The Empress of Tomorrow since her NXT debut last August.
With a stoic, intimidating demeanor, The War Goddess has steamrolled everyone in her path. Moon earned her championship opportunity after impressing NXT General Manager William Regal with an emphatic victory over Billie Kay on the March 8 edition of NXT. After learning of her impending showdown with Asuka, Moon declared that NXT will enter a new phase on April 1.
Though Asuka can be incredibly dominant when the bell rings, Moon has a secret weapon: The devastating Eclipse. No Superstar has gotten up from the brutal maneuver. Kay was left motionless in the ring for several minutes after falling to Moon, and NXT commentator Nigel McGuinness has noted that he’s seen several trainees leave the WWE Performance Center on stretchers after taking The War Goddess’ signature move. If Moon can connect with the Eclipse on Asuka, she may make good on her promise.
Who will suffer their first loss inside an NXT ring? Who will leave with the NXT Women’s Championship? Find out at NXT TakeOver: Orlando, live Saturday, April 1 at 8 ET/5 PT, only on the award-winning WWE Network!
